New Georgia Project Action Fund Policy Director Condemns Appointment of Janelle King to Georgia’s State Elections Board
(Atlanta, GA) – New Georgia Project Action Fund Policy Director, Stephanie Jackson Ali, released the following statement regarding the partisan appointment of Janelle King to Georgia’s State Elections Board.
“The State Elections Board has a massive role to play in how Georgia’s elections are run and certified, especially this year in a swing state that decided the last Presidential election. The members if the SEB could, quite literally, determine who wins in November.
The appointment of Janelle King to the Georgia State Elections Board will only weaken the Board’s power and efficacy at a time when our elections systems and Georgia voters, more importantly, already face tremendous obstacles. With this appointment, I’m increasingly concerned about the future politicization of a board that should be focused on running our elections smoothly and accessibly for Georgia voters, not on moving forward an agenda for partisan gain.
Janelle King has made previous statements questioning the integrity of the 2020 Presidential election—an argument that has long been settled after repeated investigations found no evidence of wrongdoing. Her presence on the SEB runs the risk of the Board becoming even more conservative as Georgia voters continue to navigate old and new restrictions that make it not only harder to access a ballot, but more intimidating for Black, brown, dou and young voters to even approach voting.
Rather than this partisan appointment, the Board should be focused on ensuring a fair and constitutional elections process that includes equitable access to the ballot box for all Georgians and running an elections system in which we can put our faith and trust.”
